Guidelines

Jul 10, 2009

The following contains the guidelines for solutions submitted to the Working Group.

INSTRUCTIONS

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Analysists wishing to contribute to the WG are recommended to follow the submission guidelines.

The submission should at least contain the following files:

  • Estimated station coordinates and velocities, in SINEX format. Use the SINEX format checker.
  • List of discontinuities (solution numbers), in SINEX format. More details are given below.
  • A text file with a short description of the solution, including the method (and software) used to compute it. For combined solutions, add a description of the solutions used to generate the combined solution.

EPOCHS OF DISCONTINUITIES

To allow the combination of the regional and global solutions, it is imperative that these solutions have identical discontinuities for the IGS stations (used to tie the combined solution to the ITRF). For that purpose, the discontinuities issued by the IGS are used. As the reference for the activities of the WG, the IGS discontinuity file ALL.SNX with time stamp 24/02/09 has been downloaded and made available from here. It should be used to define the discontinuities (solution numbers) of the IGS stations included in the submissions to the WG.
Some of the solution numbers in the IGS ALL.SNX file are not in chronological order:
ANG1 A 1 P 04:151:00000 00:000:00000 P -
ANG1 A 2 P 00:000:00000 04:151:00000 P - Unknown
e.g. ANG1, CAYA, CCJM, CORX, DOAR, EIL1, HFLK, IQQE, JAB1, KODK, KUMT, NETT, P202, P203, P204, PBAI, PSMK, PTLO, STAS, TONG, TRDS.
This was done on purpose by the IGS in order keep the new discontinuities in the reprocessed combination and the numbering for the official products unchanged using only one table.
If contributors observe, for the IGS stations, discontinuities that are no included in the IGS ALL.SNX file, then please inform us (iagwg@oma.be) so that this information can be archived and discussed within the WG.

DOMES NUMBERS

The full list of 4-char ID and (virtual) DOMES numbers used within the solutions submitted tot WG is available from here.

Some of the combination software used in this project may require DOMES numbers (description of IERS DOMES numbering system) for all stations in the considered networks. It will therefore be necessary to give some stations virtual DOMES numbers. Most of the regional coordinators have already started with this process. Where possible, region coordinators are encouraged to follow numbering conventions for the virtual DOMES numbers:

  • All virtual domes numbers will start with the digit 0.
  • The second digit will characterize the region: 0 for Africa, 1 and 2 for North America, 3 and 4 for Europe, 5 for Latin America, 6 and 7 for Asia & Pacific, 8 for Antarctica.
For co-located sites, it is recommended to keep the 5 first digits of the DOMES number, use "S" to indicate the tracking point, and to change the last 3 digits representing the sequential point number. Start with "999" for the sequential point number and work your way backwards.
To avoid a complete mess at the combination level, J. Legrand and C. Bruyninx will in addition
  • check all the 4-char ID and (virtual) DOMES numbers used at the regional combined and global submissions against the official tables from the IERS
  • compare the 4-char ID and (virtual) DOMES numbers used in the regional combined and global submissions
and will, in the case of duplicates, propose a new station 4 char-ID and virtual DOMES number to the region coordinators. In order to be able to spread the work, all region coordinators and submittors of global solutions are asked to send their list of stations and their auxiliary information asap (preferable in the format of the SINEX header) to iagwg@oma.be or upload it to
ftp://omaftp.oma.be/incoming/astro/Bruyninx.C/WG_DENSE_VELOCITY_FIELDS/.
